Kortatu — El Estado de las Cosas (LP, 1986, Soñua)
Second album from the Basque trio out of Irún (Fermín & Íñigo Muguruza, Treku Armendáriz), recorded at Elkar studios in 1986. The band toughens up their sound compared to the debut LP: less festive ska, more English-style punk rock, still laced with reggae. The cover art evokes the antifascist militias of 1936, echoing the title track, which pays tribute to the resistance of Irún against Franco's troops. Lyrics in Spanish and Basque (“Aizkolari,” “9 Zulo,” “Jaungoikoa eta Lege Zarra”), with committed themes: police repression, extrajudicial killings, heroin, criticism of bourgeois nationalism.
Key tracks: La Línea del Frente, Hotel Monbar, 9 Zulo, the title track. A cover of The Specials (Hay Algo Aquí Que Va Mal) closes the record in a dub version.
